Weigh-In: 401 Pounds!

Missed my Saturday weigh-in due to the holiday travels, but I was able to get myself on a scale on Sunday morning and found myself at 401 pounds! I only lost a pound, but given that it was Thanksgiving and I did have two helpings of stuffing, I’ll take it! This week I’m going to be working really hard on getting back on track after the holiday and jump-starting my weight loss again. I’m planning to add daily walks to my routine, and I’m also going to be keeping track of what I eat this week, since blogging my meals tends to help me stay motivated. I’ve got some other news this week, but I’ll save that for another post!

(Added 11/30/2007 by Verlin: Yeah, I know I didn’t post menus this week. I also forgot what my other post was going to be about…)

Weigh-In: 402 Pounds!

I weighed in on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised to see that the scale reported my weight at 402 pounds – I was expecting 404 or 405. The 400-pound mark looms in my crosshairs – I am within 2 pounds of putting weighing 400+ pounds behind me forever. In about 5 weeks of low-carb eating, I’ve lost over thirty pounds, but I still have a substantial task ahead of me. I want to get to 185 pounds, which is roughly a BMI of 23 for my height (75 inches). I started with a BMI of 54.4, and am currently down to 50.2. Since I still need to more than halve my BMI, I know I’ve got a long way to go, but I’m pretty psyched about my progress so far.

Weigh-In: 408 Pounds!

Still losing weight at around 3-5 pounds per week. Diet is going well, will probably start doing another week of meal tracking soon, mainly because I had more to write about then. Kinda busy today, so I’ll be brief, but I did want to post my weigh-in. I’m down 27 pounds since beginning my low carb eating at 435 pounds, and roughly 5 pounds from my last weigh-in. At this rate I will be putting the 400-pound mark in my rearview mirror by the end of November, roughly a month ahead of where I hoped to be. But, as I keep strongly emphasizing, as long as the numbers keep going down, I’m very pleased, no matter what the pace.

PDFsharp – A .NET library for processing PDF

For you programmers out there looking for a way to generate PDF documents from .NET code, take a look at PDFsharp. It’s not the most well-documented piece of software out there, but once you figure out how to build it and reference it into your .NET project, you’ll be creating PDF documents with ease. If you’re an open source person looking for a project to work on, and your skills run to the documentation side of things, PLEASE contribute to their wiki. Nothing after the jump, just thought I’d make a quick post on this useful, but underdocumented open source project.

Interesting Article on Weight and Mortality Risk

Tomorrow’s New York Times will feature an article entitled Causes of Death Are Linked to a Person’s Weight that presents some counterintuitive information of the relationship between a person’s weight and his or her chances of dying. Apparently, individuals that are considered overweight (but not obese) by virtue of their BMI measurement actually have a lower death rate that normal weight individuals. How does this affect you, the reader? No one knows (yet). Read more…

Avoiding The “Beef, Beef, Beef” Trap

When you tell people you’re following a low-carb eating plan, the most common response is “I bet you eat a lot of steak, huh?” The general perception is that low-carb is the “carnivore’s diet” and that people eat unlimited amounts of beef, pausing only to guzzle diet cola (made with Splenda, of course). I suppose it is possible to eat low-carb that way, but I can’t imagine you could stick to it. Eventually, you’re going to want some side dishes. So, what does the low-carb eater reach for when he isn’t gnawing on beef jerky, grinding his own hamburger, or grilling ribeyes? Read more…

Weigh In: 413 Pounds!

Not too much to add after that. Down 22 pounds since the beginning of my low-carb eating, and down 4 pounds from last week. Like I keep saying, as long as the numbers are headed in the right direction, I’m happy.

Eating Out, Eating Low-Carb, Plus Bariatric Scales!

So, for the first time since my decision to go low-carb two and a half weeks ago, I ate a meal outside the home. I went to Chili’s with some friends, mostly because I had let some salad freeze accidentally, and the prospect of soggy, smelly greens just wasn’t appealing to me. The downside to the ultra convenient Earthbound Farms salads, as it happens, is that when you have to throw them out, you can actually feel the financial hit. :-) I accidentally froze three containers of salad, and as a result, I’m out $12. Not a ton of money to be sure, but painful enough that I will remember that salads go in the crisper, not on the top shelf of the fridge. Anyway, I found myself at Chili’s, wondering what to order. What happened? The answer, as always, is after the jump!
