On Blogging Your “Weigh” To Weight Loss

I started this blog in October of 2007 to chronicle my weight-loss journey from 435 pounds to (hopefully) 185 pounds. Unfortunately, the journey turned out to be a round trip – after reaching a low of 367 pounds, I have watched my weight creep back up until I have arrived back where I started.

Well, shit.

I lost 68 pounds. I know how to lose weight. What I’m doing a piss-poor job of is staying motivated and not letting my personal issues with food overpower my desire to be fitter and live longer. That was supposed to be what this blog was about, and instead I tried to get cute and write little funnies, blog about television, my job, and whatever else. All those things would be fine to blog about if this was just a blog about a fat man who watches too much TV, spends too much time at work, and makes funny pictures of rappers and the pope. But when I started this blog, I stated that its primary purpose was to be a chronicle of my weight loss journey. Like Bugs Bunny, I took a wrong turn at Albuquerque, and I’m nowhere near where I intended to be.

So, they say the first step towards recovery is admitting you have a problem. Well, I have a problem, and it’s that my fat ass no longer fits into size 56 pants. I have to admit it, because it’s either lose weight, or do what I said I would never do, and buy size 58 (or God-forbid, size 60) pants again. How do I get back on track? Well, blogging really helped me at the beginning of my weight loss, and I want to take the lessons I’ve learned, and apply them to getting fit again for the first time in forever. So, that being said, a few things are going to change around here.

First off, “Insert Funny Name Here” is a weight loss blog. It’s not a fantasy football blog, or a tech blog, or a sup dawg blog. From this point on, my posts will all relate to weight loss in some way. I’m going to chronicle my eating, because doing so makes me accountable for everything I put in my mouth. I’m going to commit to physical activity, at least three times per week, because I felt really good when I was going to the gym, even if it did nothing for my weight. And I’m going to blog about my state of mind – if I’m feeling stressed, I’m going to release it by writing about it, not by washing down three king-sized candy bars with 40 ounces of cola. Some of my posts will be short and not particularly interesting, but it’s not like this blog has a huge readership anyway. The people who are reading would rather see me healthy that read an interesting blog.

Second, “Insert Funny Name Here” is going to look different soon. I’m going to scrap the AdSense templates and make something myself. What will it look like? I don’t know, but I want my blog to focus on me, not the seventeen bucks I’ve made on click-throughs on this site. I might still feature some advertising, but it’s going to be a better looking blog.

Third, “Insert Funny Name Here” might not be “Insert Funny Name Here”. I’ve been considering changing the name of the blog, and while I’ve not decided to pull the trigger on a name change yet, I am leaning towards it. What’s the new name? You’ll find out when it’s at the top of the page.

So, in summary, look for more frequent posts with a renewed emphasis on weight loss. 185 pounds, look out, because here I come!
